“Kili” is a fascinating corner of Africa. It is volcanic in nature, rising out of the flat grasslands, and attracts climbers from all over the world, seeking to reach the top of the highest peak in Africa. In fact, so many have come that the government has imposed increasingly strict guidelines both to protect the environment and those foolish enough to attempt the climb unprepared (like myself, many years ago!). The map shows all the climbing routes, overnight huts, water sources, and the elevation levels. The other side of the map places Kili into its context as a portion of northern Tanzania and southern Kenya, showing the closest two towns, Arusha and Moshi, but also Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Lake Victoria, and the Serengeti Plain. Ngorogoro Crater, Lake Natron, Olduvai Gorge, and Manyara National Park are all shown to advantage.
